CDC rolls out Walgreens testing for National HIV Testing Day

CDC rolls out Walgreens testing for National HIV Testing Day

June 27 is National HIV Testing Day and the Utah AIDS Foundation and the Utah Pride Center all offering free rapid tests. The UAF, 1408 S. 1100 East, will be offering testing from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The Pride Center, 361 N. 300 West, will be offering tests from 5-7 p.m.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates there are about 1.1 million Americans who are HIV-positive and aware of their status. But perhaps more dangerous is the 20 percent of HIV-positive Americans who are unaware of their status.

In order to make testing more accessible, the CDC is rolling out a pilot program for free HIV testing at Walgreens in a dozen urban and rural areas throughout the country. If successful, free and rapid HIV testing could be available at pharmacies around the nation.
