Utah Target store stocks cards for gay couples
Select Target stores are now offering wedding cards geared toward gay and lesbian couples, including the Cottonwood Heights location. Labeled, “For Two Special Men,” and “For Two Special Women,” the cards are tasteful congratulatory cards for gay couples who recently tied the knot.
While the greeting card section of the stores is operated by a third party, the approval had to come through Target’s corporate offices. The cards, which are produced by Carlton Cards, a unit of American Greetings, include phrases such as “Mr. & Mr.” and “Two very special women, one very special love.”
The cards began to roll out in June along with t-shirts with gay pride themes being sold online. The moves courting gay and lesbian shoppers came after Target drew backlash for a $150,000 donation it made to a Republican gubernatorial candidate who opposed gay marriage.
“Target is focused on diversity and inclusivity,” Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder told the Star-Tribune.
Despite the large donation to the conservative candidate, Target is a major sponsor for the Pride festivities in Minneapolis, and also scores very high on the Human Rights Campaign’s corporate equality index, which rates businesses on workplace policies for LGBT employees.
While other stores in Utah may receive shipments in the near future, the Cottonwood Heights location, 7025 Park Centre Dr., currently has several varieties of gay wedding cards in stock.
