Westminster College will host a lecture by Dr. J. Francisco Galarte entitled, “Queer & Trans* Chican@, Narratives of Survival and Hope: Reimagining the Life and Death of Gwen Araujo” on Oct. 16, 12 p.m. in the Gore School of Business Auditorium, 1840 S. 1300 East.

Galarte is an assistant professor in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona. The lecture will reflect on the 10-year anniversary of the death of Gwen Araujo, a Mexican-American transwoman who was brutally beaten and killed in 2002. The presentation will offer a re-imagining of her death through a queer, trans, and Chican@ framework that exposes the emotional dimensions of a crime of passion, such as the murder of Araujo.

Galarte’s lecture will underscore the importance of remembering such tragedies within the larger framework of fighting racism and the importance of queer politics of resistance.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information on Westminster news and events, visit news.westminstercollege.edu.
