Poll: More than 3 percent of Americans identify as LGBT

GallupPoll

More than 3 percent of Americans told the Gallup polling agency they identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. After polling 121,290 American adults, 3.4 percent said they identify as LGBT.

However, Gallup admits some limitations. First, the question lumped all four identifiers together and did not separate from lesbians and gays, for example. A second limitation is that the approach measures broad self-identity, and does not measure sexual or other behavior.

All flaws aside, the survey revealed interesting statistics about the makeup of American’s LGBT population. For example, more non-white people identified as LGBT and LGBT women are just as likely to be raising children as their heterosexual counterparts. Also, most self-identified LGBT people make less than $60,000 annually.
