Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:30 PM in the Sugar House Garden Center. The topic will be "Canning and Preserving." (We rejected the title "What to Do with Old Fruits.") With so many delicious things from the garden and orchard being ripe this time of year, it's a good time to learn more about the Utah tradition of preserving them for future use.

We hope you'll be able to join us!

We have three events coming up in the next week or so:

1. Our garden potluck on Saturday, July 30 at 6:30 PM at the home of Dan Gaffin and Douglas Tilton, 328 M St. This bungalow was featured on HGTV's "House Hunters--Where Are They Now?" If your last name begins with A-E, please bring a summer salad; F-J, a beverage to share; K-O, summer vegetables; P-T, summer fruits; and U-Z, summer desserts.

2. The New Roots Urban Garden tour on Wednesday, August 3 at 7 PM. This smal...l urban farm in West Valley City assists refugees in growing vegetables and building farm-based businesses. It is located near 3100 S. Lester St. (approx. 1600 W.); from the satellite photo it looks like you turn north on Lester St., and the farm is behind the Redwood Park ball fields on the right. You can drive directly to the site (the tour begins at 7 PM sharp), or join us at the Garden Center to carpool at 6:30.

3. The Pond Tour on Saturday, August 6 at 9 AM. This event will include some gorgeous water gardens located at private residences in the Salt Lake Valley. We will meet for breakfast at Russ and Steve's, 2660 S. 1500 E., before proceeding on the tour. PLEASE RSVP FOR THIS EVENT, so that we will know how many to expect for breakfast.

We hope that you will be able to join us for all of these fun activities!

We have several fun summer events coming up soon. Please mark your calendars for the following dates:

Saturday, July 30: Garden Potluck. This year, instead of going to several club members' gardens and spending a lot of time driving around, we are going to showcase one member's garden with a more leisurely potluck dinner.

Wednesday, August 3: New Roots Farm tour (in lieu of our monthly meeting at the garden center).

...

Saturday, August 6: Water Garden Tour. Last year's tour included some truly spectacular gardens--this is one you don't want to miss!

Our next meeting will be this Wednesday, July 6th at 7:30 PM in the Sugar House Garden Center. The rosarians from Red Butte Gardens will be telling us about how they care for the beautiful roses there. We hope that you will be able to join us!

Happy 4th of July!

The Urban Garden and Farm Tour (formerly known as the Tour de Coops) is coming up a week from Saturday, on June 25. Russ and Steve have graciously invited us to meet at their house (2660 S. 1500 E.) for breakfast at 8:30 before we begin the tour.

The group ticket doesn't seem to be an option this year, so you'll have to go to the Wasatch Community Gardens website to purchase your ticket in advance. This is always a fun event, as we get a chance to see firsthand some of the places that are producing food right here in the city. We hope you can join us!

Our next event will be the Urban Garden and Farm Tour (formerly known as the Tour de Coops) on Saturday, June 25 from 10 AM to 2 PM. This is a fun opportunity to see gardens in the city that are producing food and poultry. Some of them are beautiful, some of them have more of a "relaxed" philosophy, but we always have a good time looking at them.

The group ticket doesn't seem to be an option this year, but we'll look into it and let you know more details as the date approaches.

Just a reminder that our June meeting will be this Wednesday, June 1. This will be a wonderful opportunity to see a historic Craftsman-style home and unique urban "farm" in the middle of the city. (Contact us at altgardenclub@gmail.com for more details.)

Also, the annual Rose Show is coming up on Saturday, June 11. All are welcome to attend. Come see the beautiful roses at the Sugar House Garden Center, 1602 E. 2100 S., from Noon to 4 PM.

For our next meeting on Wednesday, June 1, the Alternative Garden Club will be gathering at Carl Gorder's historic house and farm in Salt Lake City (Please contact altgardenclub@gmail.com for the location). This beautiful Craftsman style home, complete with all its original woodwork and historic furnishings, is located on a small farm tucked away behind a residential neighborhood. The grounds include ¾ acre of ornamental gardens, vegetable gardens, and fruit trees. We'll m...eet at 7 PM, so that we have plenty of time to see things before dark.

Also, don't forget the Spring City historic homes tour this Saturday, May 28. This is a great opportunity to see some of the pioneer homes and gardens that have been lovingly restored in this well-preserved 19th-Century Mormon village. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Lunch will be available for purchase at the local ward fundraiser or from a small cafe; arts and crafts will also be for sale in the old schoolhouse. For those who want to carpool, we will meet at the Garden Center at 8:15 AM.

We hope that you will be able to join us for these fun events!

On Saturday, May 14, we will be doing a little renovation to the grounds outside the Sugar House Garden Center. Some plants will need to be removed in order to simplify the landscape and allow for more efficient watering and easier maintenance. Come join us between 9 AM and noon, and take home any of the extra plants that catch your fancy. We will be giving away perennial flowers, yuccas, and ornamental grasses, all free to a good home. P.S. Don't forget our regular meeting this Wednesday, May 4 at 7:30 PM. Thom Sawyer of Millcreek Gardens will be presenting "New Plants for Your Garden." P.P.S. Saturday, May 7 is World Naked Gardening Day. Unfortunately, you'll have to celebrate this one on your own!

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, May 4 at 7:30 PM in the Garden Center. Thom Sawyer of Millcreek Gardens will be speaking on "New Plants for Your Garden." Come hear about recent introductions from other parts of the world, as well as the latest efforts of plant hybridizers to come up with new shapes and colors. Thom will be bringing samples of these plants to show us, and he may even let us raffle them off to some lucky winners. This is one of our most popular events, and you don't want to miss it!

Please join us this Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 in the Sugar House Garden Center for our spring potluck. Bring your favorite entree, side dish, salad, or dessert; as always, we encourage you to bring a savory dish, so we don't end up with a table full of sweets and nothing else, but if you have a really good dessert that you'd like to share, please bring it!

This is always a fun event, and we hope to see you there!

The Alternative Garden Club celebrated the first day of spring by planting a street tree in Salt Lake City. Our theme this year is the planting and care of urban trees, and we'd like to remind everyone of the benefits that trees provide us, as well as the importance of taking care of trees, including watering them during times of heat and drought. We'd like to thank the six club members who participated and especially Millcreek Gardens, which generously donated the beautiful tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera). It looks great in its new home, and we look forward to seeing it grow and flourish.

For our service project this year, we have chosen to promote the care of urban trees and to plant a street tree. The location will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, on the northeast corner of 9th East and 3rd South in Salt Lake City. Millcreek Gardens is generously donating a beautiful tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) for this project.

We would love to have you join us this Sunday, March 20, at 4 PM to help plant the tree, which will replace a very large old maple that had to be taken out of the park strip on 3rd South. The forecast is for sunny, mild weather, so it should be a perfect day for planting!

Please join us this Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 PM in the Sugar House Garden Center for our regular monthly meeting. Elise Hutchings, President of the Utah Rose Society, is going to share her tips on rose pruning. With spring coming fast, March is the time to prune your roses, and this is the perfect opportunity to come learn how to care for them correctly. We hope to see you there!

Please mark your calendars for two special events in March:

Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 PM in the Garden Center: Elise Hutchings, President of the Utah Rose Society, will give us a timely presentation on how to prune roses. As most of us know, these beautiful but temperamental shrubs require special know-how, and this is your chance to have your questions answered by an expert.

Saturday, March 5 at 9 AM in the Garden Center: The Spring Convention of the Utah Associated Garden Clubs will take place. The presentation will be on exotic insect pests that threaten Utah, and what you can do about them. Light refreshments will be served. All garden club members in Utah are invited, and a prize will be awarded to the club with the most members present.

On Wednesday, February 3 at 7:30 PM we will be presenting highlights of the Chelsea Flower Show. This is the world's most famous flower and garden show, held annually in London, England. We are thinking about organizing a tour for the garden clubs of Utah which will visit the Chelsea Flower Show and many of the most beautiful gardens of England in 2017. Come join us for a preview of this amazing event.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 6 at 7:30 PM in the Garden Center. This will be our annual potluck, elections, and planning meeting. Please bring a dish to share and your ideas about what you'd like us to do as a club in 2016.

I'm not going to make any food assignments this time, but I encourage you to bring a vegetable or something savory, so that we'll have something in addition to desserts. (I'm going to bring black-eyed peas, a traditional New Year's dish that's said to bring good luck.)

This is an important (and fun) event, so we'd like to see a good turnout. Showing up does not mean that you're going to get nominated for office. However, not showing up could mean that you'll be getting a phone call . . .

On Sunday, December 6 at 5 PM our annual Christmas Potluck will take place at the home of Kevin Alvey and Peter Verschoor.
