The Alternative Garden Club

The Alternative Garden Club was founded in the early 1980's as a welcoming place for members of the LGBT community, as an "alternative" to some of the more conservative garden clubs who were less than thrilled to invite "that kind of people" into their membership.  Today, the club continues to function as a fun social group for LGBT persons and their straight allies who are interested in gardening, landscaping, and growing things.

The club meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30 PM in the Garden Center at the northeast corner of Sugar House Park.  Topics have ranged from new tomato varieties, to historic landscaping, to chickens and beekeeping.  Potlucks and special garden tours are also held from time to time.

Membership in the Alternative Garden Club is $20 per year, but guests are always free to come attend a meeting and see whether they might like to join.  For more information, look for the Alternative Garden Club on Facebook or send an e-mail to altgardenclub@gmail.com.

News and Events

For our next meeting on Wednesday, June 1, the Alternative Garden Club will be gathering at Carl Gorder's historic house and farm in Salt Lake City (contact us at altgardenclub@gmail.com for the location). This beautiful Craftsman style home, complete with all its original woodwork and historic furnishings, is located on a small farm tucked away behind a residential neighborhood. The grounds include ¾ acre of ornamental gardens, vegetable gardens, and fruit trees. We'll meet at 7 PM, so that we have plenty of time to see things before dark.

Also, don't forget the Spring City historic homes tour this Saturday, May 28. This is a great opportunity to see some of the pioneer homes and gardens that have been lovingly restored in this well-preserved 19th-Century Mormon village. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Lunch will be available for purchase at the local ward fundraiser or from a small cafe; arts and crafts will also be for sale in the old schoolhouse. For those who want to carpool, we will meet at the Garden Center at 8:15 AM.

We hope that you will be able to join us for these fun events!
